General Ecology -'The Pure Science of Safe Water'
General Ecology's purification and separation technology was scientifically developed from basic research and was optimized to effectively, reliably and ecologically remove a broad range of drinking water contaminants. These included all three forms of waterborne disease-causing microorganisms, specific toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, foul tastes, odors, sediment and other particulate matter.
This proprietary technology known as the General Ecology "Structured Matrix™" is independently certified to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's Microbiological Guide Standard Protocol for Drinking Water Purifiers, which encompasses pathogenic cysts, disease bacteria and viruses. General Ecology's Structured Matrix™ have become the industry standard of excellence against which other products are evaluated.
Attention Marine & RV enthusiasts: Things you need to know regarding your on-board water tank!
Potable water storage tanks aboard yachts, aircraft, RV's and mobile homes frequently provide an almost ideal environment for the rapid multiplication of bacteria, algae, fungi, mold, mildew, Giargia, Cryptosporidia Cysts, amoebic cysts, microscopic worms, larvae and other undesirable creatures and plants. The problem is exacerabted by using different water sources.
Most water supplies, including "city water" contain some bacteria usually non-pathogenic, but even these "harmless" bacteria can become troublesome if present in sufficient numbers. Many supplies also have been found to contain protozoan pathogens such as Giardia and chlorine proof Cryptosporidia.
Although useful for killing many pests, chlorine is not espeically effective against cysts and larger parasites and provides essentially no protection against Cryptosporidia. In addition to Cryptosporida, Giardia, amoebic dysentery cysts and other chlorine insensitive microorganisms are found essentially everywhere.
Additionally, foul tastes and odors sometimes coming from fiberglass storage tanks holding chlorinated water, can render water almost undrinkable; especially in the concentrations necessary for assured protection against bacteria.
In addition to microbiological and aesthetic considerations, it is now well established that chlorine contributes to many known and suspected cancer-inducing agents such as chloroform, carbon tectrachloride and many other halogenated hydrocarbons. (Chlorine also has been implicated in heart disease.)
When chlorine is added to our water, it combines with other natural compounds to form Trihalomethanes (chlorination byproducts), or THM's. These chlorine byproducts trigger the production of free radicals in the body, causing cell damage, and are highly carcinogenic.
By utilizing a General Ecology Water Purifier you can drink confidently and safely from your water tank no matter where you fill your tank or how often routine tank maintenance is performed.
Seagull IV® and NaturePure® Drinking Water Purification systems are environmentally friendly, that does not require the use of any added chemicals or electricity. The 'Structured Matrix™' 3-phase technology removes, waterborne contaminants instantly, down to 0.4 microns.

Brief History of General Ecology
Prior to the late 1960’s, the availability of safe drinking water was not considered to be a problem. Although stories in the media only hinted at troubles on the horizon, knowledgeable scientists and other experts who were studying the extensive pollution of both our groundwater and our surface water supplies and who knew about existing antiquated water treatment facilities, began realizing the full extent of the coming water quality problems. It became obvious that these problem were persistent, pervasive and long term and unlikely to be remedied at anytime in the near future.
Recognizing this fact, Richard T. Williams, president and founder of General Ecology, Inc, searched worldwide for a suitable technology to provide what became known as point-of-use and time-of-use drinking water purification. Finding even the best existing technology to be inadequate to remedy modern pollution problems, he organized an effort first to define and then to develop, manufacture and responsibly distribute advanced technology drinking water purification systems.
Mr. Williams, formerly a research and development engineer with the renowned Lawrence Livermore Labs brought together top scientists and engineers from the California Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Davis and the Max Plank Institute in Germany. This group, comprised from diverse, comprehensive and proven technical backgrounds, marked the beginning of General Ecology, which was incorporated in 1973.
Interestingly, there were no commercial biases to influence thinking i.e. no one on the team was associated with any manufacturer and the effort was supported solely from within the group. General Ecology’s purification and separation technology was scientifically developed from basic research and was optimized to effectively, reliably and ecologically remove a broad range of drinking water contaminants. These included all three forms of waterborne disease-causing microorganisms, specific toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, foul tastes, odors, sediment and other particulate matter. This proprietary technology now known as the General Ecology “Structured Matrix™” is independently certified to meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s Microbiological Guide Standard Protocol for Drinking Water Purifiers, which encompasses pathogenic cysts, disease bacteria and viruses. General Ecology’s purifiers with Structured Matrix™ have become the industry standard of excellence against which other products are evaluated.
While most of our products are used in residential, boating and recreation applications our customer list also compromises many sophisticated sectors. These include national and international airlines, government agencies, military and emergency preparedness organizations, professional outfitters, scientists, research laboratories, medical research teams and major corporations. Among the highlights illustrating General Ecology’s technical leadership in drinking water purification is specification into airbus industries, Bombardier and Boeing Aircraft, as well as supplying executive aircraft manufacturers such as Gulfstream and aircraft galley manufactures worldwide.
Located in the beautiful countryside near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and with distributors worldwide, General Ecology products now are sold in over 40 countries. Among General Ecology’s more popular brand names are Seagull® IV, First Need® XL, First Need Trav-L®- Pure, First Need® Base Camp™, Aqua-Polish®, BodyGuard®, Nature Pure®, UltraFine™, Versa-Pure®, Superior™ and Spark-L-Pure®. Many of General Ecology’s products and product features are patented with both U.S. and international registration, Trademarks and Trade names are registered internationally.
All products incorporate General Ecology’s unique Structured Matrix™ technology, allowing designs to be compact, lightweight, and reliably and ecologically effective in removing unwanted waterborne contaminants while leaving dissolved minerals and electrolytes essential to good health and to good taste. Foods and beverages prepared with General Ecology’s purified water taste and are more nutritious than those prepared using water heavy with chlorine and other odors, tastes and contaminants.
We continue to meet and surpass the original goals established over 44 years ago, plus new objectives, ensuring that our customer receive the benefits of refreshingly delicious and safe water…without ingesting added chemical pesticides in the process.
